Somlai Bálint

Businessman, close associate of the Matolcsy family

Corruption Nepotism

Bálint Somlai emerged as a key figure in the business network surrounding the National Bank of Hungary (MNB) through his close association with Ádám Matolcsy, son of central bank governor György Matolcsy. According to state audit findings, his companies derived between 70 and 95 percent of their revenues from the central bank or from MNB-linked foundations, a level of dependence that raises fundamental questions about competitive market conduct. He secured prestige real estate and construction projects that were exempted from normal public procurement procedures, allowing contracts financed with public money to be awarded without competitive tendering. The State Audit Office investigation launched in 2025 into MNB foundation spending has implicated the broader network in which Somlai operated, with investigative reporting consistently placing him at the centre of schemes through which public funds were routed into private enrichment.
