György Matolcsy

As Governor of the Hungarian National Bank, György Matolcsy diverted hundreds of billions of forints from central bank assets into the Pallas Athéné foundation network, claiming the funds had 'lost their public nature'. These foundations were later linked to fraud suspicions, with State Audit Office proceedings and a criminal investigation launched in 2025 demanding detailed accountability. During his tenure, real-estate and investment projects emerged whose beneficiaries included companies connected to his son, raising serious conflict-of-interest concerns. Matolcsy effectively turned the central bank into a parallel development agency, spending institutional funds lavishly on prestige projects while the MNB's independence and credibility were severely undermined.
