Zsolt Bayer

Zsolt Bayer, a founding member of Fidesz, has spent decades as one of Hungary's most prominent purveyors of hate speech, insulated from serious consequence by his close personal ties to the governing party. His writings about Roma people, in which he called them 'animals' unfit to live among humans, helped mainstream extreme racist rhetoric from within the ruling party's inner circle. During the refugee crisis he described all male refugees over fourteen as 'potential terrorists', lending intellectual cover to the government's xenophobic communications strategy. Despite repeated hate-speech fines and an international outcry that prompted other Hungarian public figures to return their own state honours in protest, Bayer himself was awarded a state decoration — a clear signal that such rhetoric carries no penalty within the system.
